The Master’s program in Environmental Data Science (MEDS) focuses on understanding, analysing, and interpreting Earth processes and environmental phenomena in their spatial and temporal context. It integrates spatial and data sciences, including remote sensing, as key tools for addressing challenges in Earth sciences. The program prepares specialists capable of understanding, interpreting, and communicating how environmental data represent the world and support scientific insight and informed decision-making in environmental management and sustainability. Students will acquire essential knowledge about the components of the environment and additional knowledge and skills in data science. The program focuses on advanced processing of hydroclimatic and other environmental data, spatial and temporal analyses of phenomena and their interconnections. Students are trained to understand the relationships between phenomena and processes at scales ranging from local to global. Through working with data from ongoing research projects, students acquire practical, hands-on experience in environmental data analysis and remote sensing. Emphasis is placed on knowledge of both passive (e.g., multispectral) and active (e.g., lidar and radar) remote sensing methods across all types of platforms (e.g., satellites, aircraft, and unmanned systems), as well as modern statistical methods, AI and cloud environments for processing big data.
Graduates of the program will be prepared to work in a wide range of professional settings, including governmental agencies and public institutions responsible for environmental monitoring, management, and protection; environmental and consulting companies; research institutions; and international organizations involved in sustainable resource management, climate and hydrological assessment. Their training, combining knowledge of the environment, spatial data, and advanced modelling methods, enables them to connect scientific research with practical environmental management and policy-making. Moreover, the program’s interdisciplinarity prepares graduates to apply their expertise in spatial data analysis, remote sensing, environmental assessment, and natural resource management, while also enabling them to coordinate projects, provide consultancy, and implement integrated solutions for sustainable environmental management. Finaly, graduates may continue their studies in doctoral programs in Earth and environmental sciences, data science, or related fields.
