  4. Staatsbetrieb Sachsenforst - Saxonian Switzerland National Park Administration
  5. Technical University Dresden

Project period: 1. 1. 2024 - 31. 12. 2026
EU financial support: EUR 1,212,100.92

Objectives and content:
The project aims to significantly strengthen the missing cooperation in the management of the red deer population. The project consortium will first evaluate the current state of ungulates in the area of both NPs, then the factors that influence the deer population will be studied; the impact of red deer on forest regeneration will also be evaluated. The main result of the project will be, through the gained knowledge, the creation of a joint red deer management strategy in both national parks. The output will reflect the differences between the two states and take into account the role of other species of mammals. For the purposes of creating the Strategy, the following will be determined:

  • population density,
  • spatial distribution and structure of the mammal population (especially deer);
  • behavior patterns of red deer (spatial activity and its change over 15 years);
  • the effect of wolves on the red deer population (predation of deer by wolves, spatial activity of wolves);
  • the effect of hunting and tourism on the red deer population;
  • the effect of deforestation (by fire, bark beetles, felling) on the behavior of deer;
  • the influence of red deer on forest regeneration.
