Provider: Czech Science Foundation
Program: Standard Grant Projects
Recipient: Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Faculty of Environmental Sciences
Principal Investigator for CULS: Prof. RNDr. Michael Komárek, Ph.D.
Co-Investigator: Institute of Microbiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, v. v. i.
Project Duration: 1 January 2025 – 31 December 2027
Project Budget: CZK 13,786,000
Abstract:
Project Objectives:
This project investigates the behaviour and accumulation of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) within food chains and the environment, focusing on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in the Arctic. The aim is to enhance our understanding of these highly stable substances and their substantial health and environmental impacts.
Key Activities:
Sampling surface water, seawater, sediments, soil, snow, and biota, including terrestrial and marine birds, mammals, plankton, and fish.
Analyzing the transfer of PFAS between trophic levels.
Employing a multidisciplinary approach that integrates environmental chemistry, toxicology, ecology, and advanced isotopic methods.
Project Significance:
This research provides valuable insights into environmental chemistry and toxicology, aiding the development of strategies to protect ecosystems and promote sustainable resource use.
