Abstract:
This project seeks to surpass the current state of the art in forensic entomology by offering a novel approach to understanding the effects of climate on the developmental rates of model species Calliphora vicina. Specifically, it addresses the crucial need for more accurate postmortem interval estimations, which are essential in forensic investigations. We will establish populations of C. vicina in the laboratory, originating from 9 countries in the gradient of South to North (Italy - Sweden) and West to East (Portugal - Romania) Europe. In a combination of ex situ and insitu trials, we will collect data on the impact of climatic and thermal predictors on the development of the target species. By correlating metapopulation structures and thermal sensitivity with developmental timings, the research aims to significantly improve the reliability of forensic analyses. This enhanced understanding of C. vicina's response will not only refine existing forensic methodologies but also lay the groundwork for future advancements in the forensic and other scientific fields.
