Abstract:
The seasonality of mortality has been well documented across various geographical areas. Different factors including weather variability, seasonal activity of acute respiratory infections (ARIs), and local-specific population characteristics play an important role in shaping this pattern. Whilst these factors have been investigated separately, their compound effects remain largely unexplored. This project’s ambition is to provide an integrated assessment of the mechanisms driving the spatiotemporal variations in seasonal mortality pattern, with focus on the impact of climate change. We propose a novel approach to assess the compound effect of ARIs and temperature on mortality, while taking into account the role of other factors. Considering the joint effect of ARIs and temperature in future projections is a significant step beyond the state-of-the-art research that will provide valuable insights for developing strategies to mitigate the health impacts of climate change. Methodological findings based on Czech data will be upscaled to European and global levels within the MCC network.
