Congratulations to Carlos! His study on the “invasive” bee Megachile sculpturalis, a large solitary bee species that has recently been recorded in the Czech Republic, has just been published in Oikos. Data from Spain show that its spread is strongly facilitated by the presence of another non-native species, the Japanese pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum). Although this bee does not appear to pose a major threat to native species, its close association with another invasive organism highlights the importance of considering which non-native species we plant in gardens and urban environments, and the potential consequences their distribution may have.
