Congratulations to Antonín Hlaváček on a new article published under our team, in the journal Insect Conservation and Diversity. As part of a long-term study of agricultural landscapes and agri-environmental practices, carried out in collaboration with VIN agro in the surroundings of Prague-Vinoř, we documented lowland hoverfly migration. This represents only the third known case of this phenomenon. This unique observation also highlighted a major problem associated with current agri-environmental practices. The results suggest that flower strips and cover crops often do not provide sufficient floral resources for late-active pollinators, and that this doesn‘t only apply to migratory species. The study contributes to the discussion on how practices supporting biodiversity in agricultural landscapes can be designed more effectively and how sufficient food resources can be ensured throughout the entire growing season.
