Workshop - Dr. Alistair Bath: How to Facilitate Stakeholder Conflicts in Nature Conservation

This short, intensive, and interactive workshop, conducted in English and led by Dr. Alistair Bath, will focus on the human dimensions (HD) of biodiversity management. More broadly, it will address effective engagement with stakeholder groups to enhance the effectiveness of conservation tools. During a single afternoon session, participants will be introduced to a four-phased method for facilitating discussions with opposing stakeholders, demonstrated through case study workshops. The case studies presented have been developed and successfully implemented worldwide by Dr. Bath, whose methods consistently lead to successful consensus-building. Dr. Bath will draw on his extensive experience from Europe (e.g., wolf conservation in Croatia and wolverine conservation in Finland, Sweden, and Norway), North and South America (e.g., bear conservation in Canada), India, and Kenya (e.g., lion conservation in Kenya) to illustrate successful applications of the human dimensions approach. He will clearly demonstrate the link between research findings and their practical implementation in conservation efforts.

Dr. Alistair Bath is an emeritus professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland (Canada) and president of Bath and Associates. With over 30 years of experience in human-wildlife conflict and the social dimensions of natural resource management, he has contributed to major conservation efforts, including the reintroduction of wolves in Yellowstone National Park and wolf population management in the Yukon. Alistair is a member of the IUCN/SSG Large Carnivore Initiative for Europe (http://www.lcie.org/) and has led numerous research projects on large carnivores across Europe, the Americas, and Africa. Through his research on the social aspects of conservation and his applied facilitated approach (AHDFWA), he has developed a deep understanding of conflict dynamics and works with diverse groups to identify and address key conservation challenges. He has taught courses on the social aspects of conservation in biodiversity programs for NGOs, IUCN, the Council of Europe, and various government agencies across North and South America, New Zealand, Kenya, Namibia, Brazil, Italy, Germany, Croatia, Slovenia, Latvia, Austria, Poland, Portugal, and most recently, India.

Dr. Bath has also been invited as a keynote speaker at several international conferences, including global conferences on wolves, bears, moose, and the Pathways Human Dimensions conferences, which focus on human-nature interactions.
