In February, Tiit Teder published in the prestigious journal Biological Conservation his first article affiliated to the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague. The study, entitled "Disperse or die: Colonisation of transient open habitats in production forests is only weakly dispersal-limited in butterflies", shows that clear-cuts are a suitable habitat for many butterfly species inhabiting open habitats. Populations of many of them are declining and, thus, properly managed clear-cuts can represent valuable habitats for their conservation. An important finding is that a great majority
of butterfly species are able to spread well into isolated clear-cuts within forest stands.
