This project addresses the growing need to better support pollinators in urban environments, where green infrastructure is often not designed to meet the ecological requirements of bees. Its main goal is to develop a practical, science-based protocol for creating and managing effective “bee refuges” that provide both floral resources and suitable nesting habitats.
The protocol will be tested through a pilot refuge established in an urban park in Viladecans, Barcelona, where its effectiveness will be monitored over time. In addition to improving habitat design, the project explores how these refuges can contribute to long-term pollinator monitoring and citizen science initiatives.
By involving local authorities and the public, the project also aims to strengthen community engagement in pollinator conservation. Ultimately, it seeks to enhance the ecological value of urban green spaces and promote more sustainable, biodiversity-friendly cities.
