New PhD position

Spatiotemporal clustering of drought events

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the Hydrological and Climate Variability Group at the Czech University of Life Sciences, Prague. The PhD research will partly contribute to the DynamicDrought project aiming to study the dynamics of drought events in different compartments of the hydrological water cycle. Existing clustering algorithms will be tested and evaluated on large hydro-meteorological datasets. The PhD candidate will develop new methods to quantify the multi-dimensional drought characteristics appropriately. The established methodology will be applied to historical observation-based datasets and future projections of the water cycle components.

The candidate should have an MSc degree in environmental science, hydrology, meteorology, climatology or equivalent. We seek candidates with: i) Sound programming/scripting skills (e.g., R, Python), ii) A big advantage would be the ability to work with large-scale datasets and familiarity with netCDF format is appreciated. iii) Interest and good knowledge of statistics, iv) Familiarity with basic hydrologic and climate characteristics, iv) Fluent English.

The PhD candidate will be requested to write scientific publications and present results at international conferences. International collaboration is expected within the project (e.g. Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ).

Please, send your motivation letter and CV to HANEL@FZP.CZU.CZ
You will primarily work with Prof Martin Hanel and Dr Oldrich Rakovec
The closing date for applications is 31-03-2023. The duration of the PhD study is 4 years. Preferable starting day: 01-10-2023.
