Field installation of a reactive barrier made of waste chips

As part of the MetalRem project, a field installation of a so-called permeable reactive barrier made of waste chips from ductile iron was carried out at the beginning of 2023 near metallurgical waste heaps. Ductile iron chips were mixed into the rock pits with an excavator, creating a 20 m long and 2 m high "reactive barrier". The purpose of the barrier is to trap metals contaminating groundwater in the area so that they do not seep into a nearby surface stream. The effectiveness of the measure will be monitored using a number of wells that our team installed in the project site.
