How does soil fertility affect invertebrate and plant communities in wildflower strips?

In this research, we aim to determine whether soil fertility—both within wildflower strips and in the surrounding arable land—has any effect on the biodiversity of invertebrates and plants. To this end, we have launched large-scale data collection across fields throughout the Czech Republic, focusing on epigeic invertebrates, pollinators, herb-layer-associated arthropods, and plant communities. Our broader goal is to optimise the establishment of new non-crop habitats in such a way that crop yields are minimally affected while biodiversity benefits are maximised. We would like to thank all participating farmers for their cooperation and for allowing us to carry out research on their farmland.

Supported by the project: Rationalization of agricultural landscapes to combine production functions with efficient biodiversity support (QL24010300).
