A new way of mine water treatment

Post-cleaning of local mine water sources from excessive amounts of metals and metalloids was performed in Slovakia using new, efficient, and innovative remediation material. A combination of woody biochar with layered double hydroxides (LDH) was successfully applied within remedial measures in two old mining areas after extensive past extraction of antimony. Field applications using transportable column technology were carried out in summer 2019 in co-operation with a company GEOtest, a.s. within the project TAČR (TJ01000015). In the longer-term, such mine water treatment could help to acquire new resources of the non-potable water, which can be further use for irrigation.
