Citizen science activities to support pollinators in urban environments

We are supporting pollinators even in children’s playgrounds across Prague. Specifically, we are monitoring 33 playgrounds, where you can contribute to pollinator research through the iNaturalist app (Hřiště plná života). The goal is to demonstrate that playgrounds can support biodiversity, and that observing nature can be fun for children and their parents alike.

The Praha kvete initiative, launched in 2020, originally aimed to create more flowering areas in Prague's urban spaces to support pollinators. So far, we have established 40 flowering plots covering 770 m2 in schools, kindergartens, and municipal areas. The project also includes educational outreach activities—we have organized 15 educational programs, 14 workshops, and 2 lectures on the importance of pollinators for both children and adults.

This year, as part of Praha kvete, we successfully ran a program at the National Agricultural Museum called Jedu v medu (All About Bees), delivered a lecture during the Open Science Week, and hosted 9 workshops for children and adults. During these workshops, we primarily built insect hotels and showed ways to protect pollinators in urban environments. However, our insect monitoring efforts remain a challenge, so don’t hesitate to join us next spring. For more information, visit the designated websites.

Supported by projects: “Municipal biological diversity: application of modern practices to support biodiversity in cities and their surroundings” (TAČR SS07010297) and “Praha kvete – How to protect insect biodiversity?“ (MHMP 08099537).
