Air purifiers can reduce indoor radioactive aerosols

New research demonstrating the effectiveness of portable air purifiers in reducing aerosol particles that can carry indoor radioactive contamination has been published in the Journal of Environmental Radioactivity! Congratulations to our PhD student, Theodor Adam! The study evaluated several devices operating on different purification principles under controlled but realistic office conditions. Measurements performed with scanning mobility particle sizers showed that HEPA-based purifiers achieved the highest reduction in total particle concentration within the 30-minute test interval, while electrostatic systems demonstrated slower yet measurable efficiency. The results clearly indicate that air purifiers can serve as effective auxiliary tools for lowering potential inhalation exposure to particle-bound radioactive aerosols.Adam T., Otáhal P., Komárek M., 2026. Evaluation of air purifiers’ effectiveness for removing radioactive aerosols indoors. Journal of Environmental Radioactivity 295, 107928. DOI: 10.1016/j.jenvrad.2026.107928
