Summer School in Kyrgyzstan Offered a Blend of Learning, Adventure and Cultural Discovery

Spending nearly three weeks at a summer school in Kyrgyzstan was one of the most incredible experiences of Lukáš Bárta's life. Hosted by the American University of Central Asia, the program was planned down to the last detail, finding a perfect balance between academic learning and unforgettable adventures. The first six days consisted of morning lectures at the university, covering topics such as the Soviet legacy in Central Asia, the epic of Manas, local history, and Russian language sessions, while afternoons were free for exploring the city, visiting historical sites, museums and local bazaars with an authentic atmosphere.

The highlight of the program was two major trips. First, the group spent two nights at Song-Köl Lake, staying in traditional yurts complete with a small stove to keep warm when nighttime temperatures dropped to around 5°C. Arriving at the lake was an immediate culture shock: instead of fenced pastures, hundreds of horses and cows roamed completely free across the endless plains, giving the group their first real taste of authentic nomadic life. Next, they spent five nights traveling around the massive Issyk-Kul Lake, swimming in it and hiking through stunning mountain terrain. A major personal achievement for Lukáš was hiking towards Ala-Köl Lake, situated at 3,500 meters above sea level – he did not reach the lake itself, as he wasn't feeling well and stayed at the base camp below it, but the breathtaking panoramic views made every step worthwhile.

Beyond the stunning scenery, the trip offered a deep dive into local daily life and nomadic lifestyle, including visits to local families who prepared authentic home-cooked lunches such as plov or laghman, and tastings of local fermented beverages. Most importantly, the journey brought the university group closer together, creating lifelong friendships and memories that will last forever.

l stay with me forever.
